November 27 , 2008

Family members of a man shot to death in the Beltline this summer say they're relieved a person has been taken in for questioning by police in relation to the slaying.A man was arrested at a Lethbridge trailer court Wednesday night in connection with the Aug. 18 shooting of Efrem Mehari Kuflom, 30.Police hadn't laid charges by press time Thursday and were releasing few details, including the man's name.

But Kuflom's sister, Ruth Kuflom, said she was pleased to hear news of progress in the case.Ruth said her brother's violent death was made even more painful by the fact he left behind a pregnant fiancee, who is set to give birth to Kuflom's child in the next two weeks."It's a really difficult time for us,"Ruth said.

On Aug. 18, shots were fired in the alley between 12th and 13th avenues near 11th Street S. W. around 11:30 a. m.A black Pontiac crashed into a nearby fence, and a lone man was found dead inside the car.

Ruth Kuflom said her younger brother, who was living with her at the time of his death, was a dedicated student who'd just graduated as an aircraft structure technician from SAIT before he was shot to death this summer. The young man planned to marry as soon as he got a job, she said.

Ruth rejected the notion that her brother would get mixed up with a drug crowd--especially with the birth of his first child fast approaching."I can't believe that stuff. He was my helper brother, he was a really cool guy," she said.

Members of the Lethbridge police tactical team, major crimes unit and K9 unit worked with Calgary police to arrest the man, wanted for questioning in connection with the slaying. They took him into custody Wednesday night at the Lethbridge Westside Trailer Court. The man was taken to Calgary, where he was interviewed by detectives. The investigation is continuing.
